This week we focused on reading nonfiction texts and writing “research” papers. I’m not sure if I’m doing this right,…

Your students know the phonics skills…so why are some of them STILL struggling? Maybe they can read the simpler words, but things start to fall apart as the words get bigger.Maybe they know a phonics pattern during the lesson, but you’re not seeing it transfer to their reading and spelling.Maybe they can decode the word…but have no idea what it means.Or maybe YOU can see where your students are getting stuck, but you’re not always sure what to point out or say in the moment. That’s exactly what we’re talking about TOMORROW. 🎉Join us for our FREE Masterclass! We’ll show you how understanding just a little more about how words actually work can change what you notice, how you respond when students get stuck, AND help you do more with the literacy instruction you’re already providing. And yes—this is for K–5. 🙌📅 September 30

You probably know by now that we love to take phonics instruction one step further by connecting sounds and spelling to meaning, word structure, and grammar.Since it’s back-to-school season, we thought we’d bring back this word breakdown—with a little makeover!Swipe to break down the word teacher and see how much language learning can grow from just one word.Try choosing a word from your first read-aloud, morning message, or classroom routine and exploring it from several angles. These quick conversations help students build richer, more connected knowledge about words.Save this post to inspire your back-to-school word work, and make sure you give us a follow for more like this! #wordsnippet #logosliteracyacademy
Decodable texts are intentionally simple. We want students reading words with phonics patterns they’ve actually been taught. But our vocabulary conversations don’t have to be limited by the words students can decode. Some pretty simple words can lead to really rich conversations. These don’t need to become long vocabulary lessons. Look for one or two interesting opportunities in the text and spend a minute talking about them. And once you start looking, you’ll find them everywhere! The text students read may need to be controlled, but the language we build around it doesn’t have to be! Comment “decodable” and I’ll send you a link to some new sets I’ve made that provide opportunities for quick vocabulary discussions.
For years, I’ve used my Read, Visualize, Create activities with my K–2 students. They’ve always been one of my favorite ways to get kids to slow down, reread, and really think about what they’re reading. Then this summer, one of my tutoring students spotted them and asked if he could try one.The problem? He had just finished up third grade, and the passages were way too easy.So I made him a more challenging version. He loved it.Then I made another... and another... and before I knew it, I had created an entire Intermediate series. It’s become one of my favorite tutoring resources because we’re practicing so many skills at once. Students decode a rich informational passage, build fluency through rereading, visualize the scene, and keep returning to the text to place each piece correctly. Without even realizing it, they’re gathering evidence, monitoring for meaning, and strengthening comprehension every step of the way.Sometimes the best ideas come from listening to our students. ❤️Comment “habitat” if this is something you think your students will enjoy!
