Decodable texts are intentionally simple. We want students reading words with phonics patterns they’ve actually been taught.But our vocabulary conversations don’t have to be limited by the words students can decode. Some pretty simple words can lead to really rich conversations.These don’t need to become long vocabulary lessons. Look for one or two interesting opportunities in the text and spend a minute talking about them.And once you start looking, you’ll find them everywhere!The text students read may need to be controlled, but the language we build around it doesn’t have to be! For years, I’ve used my Read, Visualize, Create activities with my K–2 students. They’ve always been one of my favorite ways to get kids to slow down, reread, and really think about what they’re reading.Then this summer, one of my tutoring students spotted them and asked if he could try one.The problem? He had just finished up third grade, and the passages were way too easy.So I made him a more challenging version.He loved it.Then I made another... and another... and before I knew it, I had created an entire Intermediate series.It’s become one of my favorite tutoring resources because we’re practicing so many skills at once. Students decode a rich informational passage, build fluency through rereading, visualize the scene, and keep returning to the text to place each piece correctly. Without even realizing it, they’re gathering evidence, monitoring for meaning, and strengthening comprehension every step of the way.Sometimes the best ideas come from listening to our students. ❤️Comment “habitat” if this is something you think your students will enjoy!
